After four and a half hours of football, FCA Cold Control were crowned Cold Control Cup Winners 2008, when they beat their FCA counterparts 2 - 0 in the final. Goals from Craig Kelly and Karl Hope were enough to win the trophy in its first year of competition.
The tournament itself was played out in front of a generous crowd as teams from Alton and its surrounding areas competed in group and then knockout format.
Group A took a while to get going as the first three matches were played to goaless draws and even the fourth match finished with a share of the spoils as FC Sparks drew with FCA Cold Control. The fourth game did see the first goal of the tournament though when Lloyd Foot turned in a corner midway through the game.
It meant the final two group matches were winner take all and that's just what FCA Cold Control did when Dan Gullon's goal gave them priceless victory against Four Marks.
The final match between Alton Sunday 'A' and FC Sparks was not so straightforward as goals from Lloyd Foot (2) and a brace from Rich Lintott meant the game ended all square. With both teams on level points and the same goal difference, FC Sparks progressed to the semi-finals by virtue of having scored one more goal.
Group B was much more open and free scoring. Victories against Alton Sunday 'B' and Sigma with goals from Mac Phillips (2), Tom Murrell, Paul Smith and Jamie Liddiard respectively meant FCA Srixon topped the group.
Sigma and Froyle played out a feisty 2 - 2 draw where an end to end game saw Pat Cox and Simon Cook net for Sigma and James Chamberlain and Graeme Wearne score for Froyle.
After Froyle's drawn against FCA Srixon in the penultimate game, it meant Sigma had to beat Alton Sunday 'B' if they wanted to finish second. As it was, in the one of the highest scoring games in the day, Alton Sunday triumphed with a brace from Chris Mabbott and the third from Sam Edwards. Two goals from Tom Cox offered little more than a consolation.
The first Semi Final proved a step too far for Alton Sunday as early goals from Neil Pullman sent FCA Cold Control on their way to the final. Neil Pullman completed his hat-trick later on as Craig Kelly added gloss to the scoreline with a brace of his own.
The second Semi Final was a much tighter affair. FCA Srixon who had been free scoring in the group stages were poor and FC Sparks controlled the game for long periods. With chances at a premium it was no surprise that even after extra time there had been no winner. Mac Phillips scored first for FCA whilst Joe Brock saved FC Sparks' first effort. Joe Brock then too the second penalty and blasted it straight down the middle. Lloyd Foot who finished (joint top scorer in the tournament) kept this team in it when he casually rolled his shot in the corner, but Toby Liddiard sent FCA Srixon to the final as he buried the final penalty to the goal keepers left.
It was unfortunate for FC Sparks and Alton Sunday 'A' from the group stages as both teams went out of the competition unbeaten!
The Final therefore pitted both teams from FC Alton and it was FCA Srixon who started the early running. A lapse in concentration from Shane Phillips meant FCA Srixon were awarded an early penalty but this time Mac Phillips missed the target and the momentum began to shift. Lee Grant's 1-2 and early cross found Craig Kelly who side footed FCA Cold Control in the lead. It was his third goal of the tournament as he joined Neil Pullman and Lloyd Foot as leading scorer.
The victory was assured in the second half when Karl Hope sent a stinger of a volley into the bottom left hand corner.
The tournament was a huge success as players, fans and parents came to support their respected teams. In what will become an annual tournament, FC Alton would like to extend their thanks to all those teams who took part and look forward to their involvement next year as well.
