Dynamo Cove were crowned Champions of the 2009 Cold Control Cup with a 3-1 win in the final against FC Sparks. Stuart Jackson opened the scoring for Cove with an early tap in and Darren Cooper doubled the lead moments later. Ben Simpson converted a penalty to give FC Sparks some hope but Jackson made sure of the trophy with his second goal of the match and his fifth overall.
Group A
FC Sparks were rampant in finishing top of the Group starting with a 2 - 1 victory over defending Champions FCA Cold Control. They followed it up with a comfortable victory against Manor Old Boys before securing their qualification as Group Winners with a 1 - 1 draw with Alton Wanderers 'A'.
FCA Cold Control recovered from their early defeat against FC Sparks with a draw against Alton Wanders 'A' before a goal from Lee Pink earned them the three points they needed against Manor Old Boys to reach the semi finals for the second successive year.
Talking about successive years, Alton Wanderers 'A' once again fell short of knockout qualification, picking up three draws, leaving them agonisingly short of making their first appearance in the semi final. It means that over the two years, they are yet to be defeated in the competition - but yet to win either!
Manor Old Boys finished their debut appearance in the Cold Control Cup with one draw and two defeats. Paul Gibbs scored with a low drive against Alton Wanderers 'A' to give Manor their only goal but their overall performances and quality of play deserved more.
Group B
Dynamo Cove looked in good shape as they progressed from the Group Stage with ease. A draw in the opening fixture was followed up with comfortable victories against Wey Valley and FCA Srixon as they finished top of Group B.
Wey Valley were arguably the surprise package of the tournament, particularly with an opening game upset against last years finalists, FCA Srixon. Oli Matravers scored the crucial goal in the 1-0 victory and despite a 3-1 reverse against Cove, secured the point they needed against Alton Wanderers 'B' to progress to the Semi Final.
FCA Srixon recovered from the early set back to Wey Valley with a big victory against Alton Wanderers. Goals from Pullman, Grant and Liddiard meant a win against Cove would secure a semi final appearance. A shocking opening five minutes put pay to that though and the hosts had to settle for third place.
Alton Wanderers 'B' were unfortunate to not win any of their three fixtures. Their opening match against Cove was finely balanced and despite being outplayed against Srixon, they created a lot of pressure against Wey Valley, but just couldn't find the inner. They finished the tournament with two draws and the one defeat.
Semi Finals
FC Sparks cemented their position as the early pacesetters with a comfortable 4 - 1 victory against Wey Valley. Jim Dougill opened the scoring for Valley but Sparks responded with goals from Chuter, Simpson, Refell and Way to secure their first appearance in the Cold Control Cup final.
Dynamo Cove made the most of their invitation with an equally impressive 3-0 victory over the defending Champions, FCA Cold Control. Although both teams had chances, Cove were again clinical with Jackson, Brain and Norton scoring the goals that sent them through.
Final
In a highly charged and competitive final, Dynamo Cove opening the scoring when Stuart Jackson tapped in at the back post. Darren Cooper extended the lead minutes later when he profited from more slack defending by finishing from just inside the area. FC Sparks rallied and set up a tight finish when Neil Foot was adjudged to have been pulled down in the area and Ben Simpson scored the resulting penalty. Stuart Jackson made sure of the victory though when he scored five minutes from the end to not only secure the tile but the Golden Boot as well.
Once again, the Cold Control Cup was played in front of a generous crowd of players, fans and parents alike. FC Alton would like to extend their thanks to all the teams who took part and look forward to their involvement next year as well.
